Hello and welcome back to all our Truman Elementary families. I hope that you have all had a wonderful summer spent on vacation, with family and friends, or just relaxing. We have been amazed at the number of new students that are coming to our wonderful school. We are by far the largest elementary school in the district and that means that we have the amazing opportunity to make a positive impact on so many more children.
As many of you may recall, we were working on changing our school status last year from a Title I Targeted Assistance school to a Title I Schoolwide school. I am happy to let you all know that the state has indeed changed our status and we are now a Title I Schoolwide school for the next two years. As a brief reminder of what that means, we have been a Title I Targeted Assistance school. That meant that after assessing our students, only those students identified, or targeted, could receive services and support through the Title I program. There are many times that students who need help or would fit into a group that had Title support could not receive it because of the way the Title law is written. We chose to go to a Title I Schoolwide program because all students can have access to the teachers, materials, and all other supports as defined by the Title I law. This also means that the Title program is no longer a separate class or “room” students have to go to for support. The support can flow to all students who need the help, when they need help, and in the environment that best suits their needs. This is an amazing and important change for the entire school.
We were very happy to see so many of our new kindergarten parents here at the school Monday night. It was a great turnout and we hope so see the rest of you at the school open house on August 23, from 6:00-7:00. We will have two sessions as we did last year. From 6:00 to 6:30, you can go to either the gym or to classrooms to meet teachers. We will change at 6:30 to 7:00 and I will have the same presentation for everyone that started in classrooms at 6:00. I will speak for about 10 minutes on the Title changes to our school, where our school is now, and where we want to be in the next few years. Teachers will be in their classrooms to meet students and families. We hope to see all of you here Tuesday, August 23, from 6:00-7:00.
I know that the Parent/Student Handbook is a lot to read, but there is a section that I need to remind everyone about. Students who are going to have breakfast can come as early as 8:05. If students are not eating breakfast they are not to arrive at school before 8:20 in the morning. We don’t have adult supervision at the school for students that come before these times.
Again, welcome back for another year at Truman Elementary. If you need to talk to me, stop by the office and we will have a cup of coffee and talk. You can also call the school at 872-1900, to schedule a time to meet if that works better for your schedule. We are going to have a wonderful 2016-2017 school year.
