This year Mr. Asselmeier and Mr. Roska are teaming up to team teach your 4th grader for their reading groups. We are excited to see them grow and help them along their path to achieving their academic goals.
Every year we get questioned on what kind of homework the students will be receiving for reading. With Reading Mastery there is not a homework piece that comes with it, and we are usually able to finish all of the assigned work in the classroom.
We are focusing on the mechanics of reading in the classroom and we would like you to help us by simply having your child read 20 minutes a day. Out-of-school reading habits of students has shown that even 15 minutes a day of independent reading can expose students to more than a million words of text in a year. -Anderson, Wilson, & Fielding, 1988.
What we need your help with:
• We need them to read at least 20 minutes a day, out loud. (We do this to ensure that they’re actually reading, and that they’re catching their own mistakes)
• We need them to read chapter books. (Not picture books or even chapter books with a lot of pictures.)
• Once they have read for 20 minutes, they will bring you a bookworm receipt, they should fill out the information and all you will need to do is sign it!
If you’re already doing these things, please keep up the good work! We know that some of the students may have a hard time and fight against doing it, and that’s where we can help. If you run into any resistance, please let us know and we can work through it together. If you have any concerns, please let us know, our doors are always opened! I look forward to working with you and your child this school year!
